An urgent call to action

Our Science Based Targets

The challenge of climate change is unrelenting and like people and businesses around the world, we feel the urgency to act.

As the country’s largest energy retailer, we understand the role we have in empowering New Zealand to a sustainable future as we all work toward the goal of net-zero carbon by 2050. This means changing how we do things - from generating energy through to helping how customers manage and use their energy. The actions we take must be grounded in science. We’ve worked with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to help maximise and measure the positive impact of the changes we’ll make.

Our Science Based Targets
Genesis Energy Limited commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions 36% by 2025 from a 2020 base year.
Genesis Energy Limited also commits to reduce absolute scope 3 emissions from use of solid products 21% by 2025 from a 2020 base year.

Our targets align to limiting global warming to below 1.5°C by 2025. Outside of Europe, Genesis is the only electricity generator and retailer to tie targets to 1.5°C with the SBTi.
