An urgent call to action

Our Science Based Targets

The challenge of climate change is unrelenting and like people and businesses around the world, we feel the urgency to act.

As the country’s largest energy retailer, we understand the role we have in empowering New Zealand to a sustainable future as we all work toward the goal of net-zero carbon by 2050.

This means changing how we do things - from generating energy through to helping how customers manage and use their energy. The actions we take must be grounded in science. We have worked with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to help maximise and measure the positive impact of the changes we will make.

Our targets align to limiting global warming to below 1.5°C by 2025. Outside of Europe, Genesis is the only electricity generator and retailer to tie targets to 1.5°C with the SBTi.

We will reduce generation emissions by 36% and emissions from products we sell and goods and services that we buy by 21%.
