  • Genesis ERT win 2018 Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge

Congratulations to Genesis’ Energy Emergency Response team, winners of the 2018 Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge. The team is made up of 11 Genesis employees. All members volunteer in the company’s emergency rescue crew at Genesis’ Huntly Power Station, and have fitted extensive training around their regular working duties.

The crew raced up all 1,103 steps of the Sky Tower in full firefighters’ kit in just 31 minutes. Not only did the crew take out first place from a field of 92 firefighting brigades, crew members also achieved some outstanding personal results, including:

  • Gold medal - Supreme Masters category (60 years+) (Alan Bennett with a time of 14:04)
  • Gold medal – Fastest total team time
  • Silver medal – Fundraising total for a single brigade ($40,053)
  • 7 ERT members finished in the top 100 fastest times for the day
  • 3 ERT members finished in the top 20 fastest times for the day
  • 2 ERT members finished in the top 10 fastest times for the day

Achieving outstanding performance was not the crew’s sole focus when competing. Significant effort goes into fundraising. The event supports the work of Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand, a charity that receives no government funding.

"Genesis’s crew set themselves an ambitious target this year. Their goal was to donate $40,000 to the charity. This was achieved with significant support from Genesis’ employees. Congratulations to our Emergency Rescue Crew members on their outstanding performance and on running a highly successful fund raising campaign. What’s been achieved is huge and extends beyond winning the event. The crew are a high performing team, and the skills they have developed around leadership, teaming and driving for results are flowing back into our workplace. I’m incredibly proud of the impact the crew is having on Genesis’ culture and how we work," Tracey Hickman, Executive General Manager, Generation & Wholesale, Genesis.
