Genesis commits to helping vulnerable families

30 April 2019 Genesis has joined forces with the Electricity Retailers Association of New Zealand (ERANZ), the Government and the wider electricity sector to help fund and launch EnergyMate, a free in-home energy literacy service to help families most at risk of energy hardship.

Genesis EGM Customer and Innovation, James Magill says, “At Genesis, we’re passionate about giving customers the tools and knowledge they need to understand and manage their energy use. We’re proud to support EnergyMate in providing vulnerable families with access to practical energy-related advice.”

EnergyMate will be delivered by community-based financial mentors and will support vulnerable families to help cut power bills and increase warmth by:
  • getting on the best electricity plan for them,
  • heating their home in the cheapest way possible,
  • using simple tips to make their home more energy-efficient, and
  • connecting them with other services such as insulation or budgeting support.
EnergyMate will strengthen Genesis’s initiatives to help vulnerable customers and joins Genesis’ existing community investment initiatives designed to help customers in need; Sustainability Trust Curtain Bank, Community Energy Action Curtain Bank.
“Our Vulnerable Care Package provides a wide range of services to support those who are medically dependent or just need a bit of extra help controlling and managing their energy use,” says James.
Initially, EnergyMate will be trialled across 150 families in South Auckland, Rotorua and Porirua. Find out more at
