Genesis and Coronavirus (COVID-19)

20 March 2020

Genesis is well prepared in its response to COVID-19 and determined to continue providing essential energy services. At times like this, the biggest contribution we can make is to look after our people, customers and to keep the lights and heating on for households and businesses in New Zealand.

As the situation evolves, Genesis will continue to provide updates.

Security of supply

Genesis has robust resiliency and business continuity plans in place to manage through this challenging time and does not anticipate any impact on our ability to generate electricity or supply gas and LPG at this stage.

As an electricity generator, retailer and provider of LPG, Genesis is classified as an “Essential Service” by the New Zealand Government. Our people are working alongside the wider industry in response to COVID-19 to help manage the security of energy supply for the country. Key risks being managed include:

  1. Inability to operate a Generation site due to staff or contractor shortages
  2. Generation plant outage from supply chain issues such as equipment manufacturing or delivery delays or supplier staff unable to travel
  3. Fuel supply disruption due to import restrictions, shipment delays or gas delivery constraints
  4. Inability to supply LPG due to staff shortages or supply chain constraints
  5. Inability to field customers service queries due to staff shortages or system outages
  6. Transmission of the virus between staff

So far there has been no material disruption to our ability to safely deliver energy to New Zealand homes and businesses, and we will continue to monitor these and other risks.

Supporting our customers

We understand that these are uncertain times for our customers. We are working to manage the impact of COVID-19 on our business so that electricity supply is one less thing for our customers to worry about. We are also aware that the situation will be more challenging for some than others, as the impacts of COVID-19 and the measures taken to contain the spread of the virus are felt over time. If you are struggling to pay your bill or are medically dependent, please use the Live Chat functionality here on the website to discuss how we can support you.

Taking care of our people

The health and wellbeing of our people is a priority. As the situation evolves, Genesis is following Government guidelines and advice and adopting appropriate measures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our people and minimise the impact of the virus on our business. From Tuesday 24th March, all Genesis Energy employees are now working from home, with the exception being essential workers (those that operate power stations, LPG drivers and fillers, spot traders and technology infrastructure).

Despite the challenges posed by the impact of COVID-19, the essence of what we do has not changed – we remain relentlessly focussed on looking after our people, serving our customers and providing the energy that our economy needs.
