The minimum flow is 16 cubic metres per second.

Recreational releases from Poutu Intake will occur on two Saturdays each year between 1 January - 30 September, in the same weekend as recreational flows from Rangipo Dam. The target flow for a recreational release from Poutu Intake is 30 cubic metres per second. The dates for recreational releases are set in agreement between Genesis Energy and the New Zealand Recreational Canoeing Association.

Information on recreational releases is also available at the NZRCA website.
