The Electricity Commission is a Crown entity responsible for regulating and overseeing the electricity market. It does this through a range of functions that include maintaining the electricity governance rules, contracting with market service providers and approving major grid investment proposals.

The Commission was established in 2003 and, under legislation before Parliament at the time of writing, may be disestablished on 1 October 2010 and replaced by an independent Crown entity called the Electricity Authority.
