Waikato River Care
[missing FMS file] The Waikato River is a national and regional icon holding significant cultural, economic, social and environmental values. The Waikato River Enhancement Society (trading as Waikato RiverCare) was initiated in 1999 and is supported by a range of community stakeholders with a common vision and purpose. The purpose is to implement a sustainable programme of action to clear, plant native vegetation on the banks of the lower Waikato River and maintain the area. Genesis Energy is one of the group's founding members. Other members include local councils, businesses, iwi and community groups.
Genesis Energy staff participate in volunteer days with Waikato RiverCare, as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility programme. Tasks involve planting, mulching, pruning and clearing parts of the riverbank and allow staff to learn while giving back to the community and having fun!
The geographic area covered by the project is north of Hamilton City along the Waikato River (downstream) to the river mouth at Port Waikato. There are at least 120 km’s of riverbank downstream of Hamilton and Waikato RiverCare’s goal is to enhance up to 4 km’s of riverbank per year.
To date, thirteen enhancement sites have been established at Meremere, Horahora, Ngaruawahia, Huntly, Rangiriri, Churchill East, Te Kokiri and Huntly Golf Course, with plans to extend these sites in the near future.
