Heat Pump Assumptions and Calculations

Conventional electric heaters are 100% efficient, which means the amount of heat they produce is about the same as the amount of electricity they use. But heat pumps produce more than three times more heat than the energy they use, making them at least 300% efficient. In dollar terms that means you can save up to $1,019.20 a year* on heating an average size living area for 6 months (26 weeks) of the year compared to using two oil column heaters.

*Power savings 5,096 kWh.
*Cost savings = 5,096 x $0.20 = $1,019.20.

Assumptions

  • Suggested annual savings are based on heating a well-insulated area of 30m2 with a 2.4m stud for 10 hours per day during winter months (estimated at 26 weeks) and comparing an energy efficient Panasonic heat pump (model CS/CU-E9LKR) with a 3.6 kW output operating at 100% and two electric heaters with a combined output of 3.6 kW at 100%.
  • Running costs estimates are based on the same daily HEAT output of 36.0 kWh with electricity prices calculated at 0.20 cents/kWh variable rate.

Annual Savings
Electricity used

Per day = (3,600W x 10)/1,000
= 36.0 kWh

Per week = 36 kWh x 7 days
= 252 kWh

Per year = 252 kWh x 26 weeks = 6,552 kWh

Per day = (800W x 10)/1,000 = 8 kWh

Per week = 8 kWh x 7 days = 56 kWh

Per year = 56 kWh x 26 weeks = 1,456 kWh

6,552 kWh - 1,456 kWh =
5,096 kWh

Annual Costs ($)

= (6,552 kWh x $0.20) =
$ 1,310.40

= (1,456 kWh x $0.20) = $291.20

= $1,310.40 - $291.20
$1,019.20
