Genesis Energy signs relationship agreement

10 March 2011

The Whanganui River Maori Trust Board and Genesis Energy acknowledged the signing of Hei Whakaaro Tahi ki te Mana o te Awa, a relationship agreement, at a celebratory hui at Ngapuwaiwaha Marae in Taumarunui earlier this week.

The agreement represents the commitment of the iwi and hapu of the Whanganui River and Genesis Energy to work together for the benefit of the health and wellbeing of the Whanganui River. The agreement establishes a framework for a positive and enduring relationship between Genesis Energy and the iwi, hapu and whanau of the Whanganui River that promotes good faith engagement and the opportunity to collaborate on matters of mutual interest in relation to the Whanganui River.

The issue of the diversion of the headwaters of the Whanganui River by the Tongariro Power Scheme has been a longstanding grievance of the Whanganui River iwi and the subject of extensive claims and litigation over many years.

The Chairman of the Whanganui River Maori Trust Board, Brendon Puketapu, said that while it remained the long-term aspiration of the Whanganui River iwi to end the Tongariro Power Scheme’s diversion of waters, the agreement reflected the desire of the iwi to step away from the Courts and engage in dialogue with Genesis Energy in a non-adversarial environment.

Dame Jenny Shipley, Chairman of Genesis Energy, said "Genesis Energy is committed to the relationship and welcomes the opportunity for constructive discussion and to working with our iwi partners for the health and wellbeing of the Whanganui River and its catchment".

Mr Puketapu and Dame Jenny paid tribute to leadership and vision of the late Sir Archie Atawhai Taiaroa who was instrumental to the achievement of the agreement being celebrated.
