Resource consents granted for Huntly Power Station

Genesis Energy is pleased to secure flexible, long-term resource consents for on-going generation from the Huntly Power Station, following a successful application process with the Waikato Regional Council.

Resource consents to run the coal and gas Units 1 to 4 at Huntly were due to expire in early 2013. Genesis Energy worked closely with Iwi and stakeholders in preparing for the replacement applications, and addressed a range of matters to ensure that the effects of the station were well understood and monitored, and that effective operating standards are in place. 

The replacement applications were lodged in November 2011 and were recently granted without a Hearing after resolving the six submissions received on the applications.  Genesis Energy is pleased to have identified and worked through areas of interest for Iwi, stakeholders, Councils, and the community, achieving good outcomes for the power station and the Waikato River.

Genesis Energy’s Chief Executive Albert Brantley said the consent term of 25 years supported the continued long term strategic role of the Huntly site.

“The current framework and operating conditions – that were developed following a thorough consultative process in the 1990s – have again proved to be effective and strike the right balance between the Station’s operational requirements and environmental and community impact,” said Mr Brantley.

This framework has largely been retained in the replacement consents. In some cases, operating conditions and environmental monitoring programmes for the Station were fine-tuned to meet stakeholder concerns, while still providing for operational requirements.
