Recreational releases

Genesis Energy’s resource consents for the Waikaremoana Power Scheme require recreational flow releases from Piripaua Power Station and Tuai Power Station.

Assess the conditions for yourself before entering the river, and please ensure anyone using the river is aware of these flow changes.

 

Waikaretaheke River below Lake Whakamarino recreational releases

A flow of 20 cubic metres per second for 6 hours will be released from Lake Whakamarino between 9am and 3pm on the following date:

  • Saturday 5th November 2011 - Cancelled due to health and safety reasons. A broken bridge in the river poses a significant hazard to kayakers.
  • Sunday 6th November 2011 - Cancelled due to health and safety reasons. A broken bridge in the river poses a significant hazard to kayakers.
  • Saturday 20th October 2012

*Note the above date coincides with a recreational releases of 12 cubic metres per second from Piripaua Power Station.

 

Waikaretaheke River below Piripaua Power Station recreational releases

Flows of 28 cubic metres per second for 6 hours will be released from Piripaua Power Station between 9am and 3pm on the following dates:

  • Sunday 22nd January 2012
  • Sunday 15th April 2012
  • Friday 19th October 2012

Flows of 34 cubic metres per second for 6 hours will be released from Piripaua Power Station between 9am and 3pm on the following dates:

  • Sunday 11th December 2011 - Cancelled due to lack of interest from kayakers as well as health and safety reasons. A broken bridge in the river poses a significant hazard to kayakers.
  • Sunday 26th February 2012
  • Sunday 19th August 2012
  • Sunday 9th December 2012

A flow of 12 cubic metres per second for 6 hours will be released from Piripaua Power Station between 10am and 4pm on the following date:

  • Saturday 5th November 2011 - Cancelled due to health and safety reasons. A broken bridge in the river poses a significant hazard to kayakers.
  • Sunday 6th November 2011 - Cancelled due to health and safety reasons. A broken bridge in the river poses a significant hazard to kayakers.
  • Saturday 20th October 2012

*Note the above dates coincide with recreational releases of 20 cubic metres per second from Lake Whakamarino.
