Hakarimata Riparian Enhancement Project
During 1995-1996 ECNZ (Genesis Energy’s predecessor) carried out habitat enhancement works on three streams in the Hakarimata Ranges near Huntly. The aim of the project was to increase native fish populations and fish breeding in the area. The three streams are locally known as Forested, Firing Range and Martin Stream. The enhancement activities included: planting the stream edges, building bridges, excluding stock from the streams with fences and installing water troughs for stock where they previously accessed the streams for drinking.
How the streams were enhanced (1995-1996)
Firing Range Stream:
- Bridge constructed
- 4km of fences installed
- Water reticulation provided
- Indigenous seedlings planted
- Enhancement of culvert
Martin Stream:
- 3 bridges constructed
- 5km of fences installed
- Water reticulation provided
- Indigenous seedlings planted
Forested:
- Bridge construction
- Fences installed
- Water reticulation provided
- Indigenous seedlings planted
Monitoring of the streams.
The 2005 monitoring of the enhanced streams showed that:
- Firing Range Stream had high numbers of juvenile Giant Kokopu, indicating excellent recruitment. Redfin Bully numbers had also increased.
- The results from Martin Stream showed that a new indigenous species, Lamprey, was now present in the stream.
- The number of Giant Kokopu in Forested Stream had also increased in number.
Ongoing Maintenance
Ongoing maintenance of these streams is very important for the success of this project. Genesis Energy currently carries out maintenance on the stream crossings and plantings, which includes:
- Installation of culverts
- Fencing
- Additional planting; and
- Weed control
